Botanical Bundle Dyes Workshop
We don’t ‘go natural’ we return. ‘Natural’ is where it all began…
Discover the alchemy of plant colour. Creating art with nature using simple direct techniques.
Workshop date: Saturday 3rd August 2019
Workshop Time: 10:00 to 13:00
Workshop Location: Surrey Art School, RH5 5DL
Workshop tutor: Ginny Farqhuar
Pause and connect with nature as you prepare, roll, bind and infuse plant essences and colours onto cloth. This deeply grounding craft allows you to relinquish control and let nature lead you.
Join botanical dyer Ginny and explore the magical process of capturing colour from herbs, petals, seeds and plants onto cloth.
During the morning you will explore two different direct methods of creating colours and patterns from plants: bundle dyeing and ‘Hapa-zome’ or flower pounding. Ginny will encourage you to relinquish control allowing nature to lead the process in what becomes a meditative, playful and fun activity.
You will explore the plant material available, learn a little about fast versus fugitive dyes and discuss how to prepare the cloth to be receptive to take up the plant colours.
Ginny will illustrate a few different ways to fold and apply your chosen plant materials before supporting you as you work intuitively to create your own plant infused watercolour effect silk scarf using a bundle and bind technique. As the bundles are steaming there will be time for playing with hapa-zome on paper and cloth and discussing natural dye theory and history. As always Ginny will bring along samples of her ongoing plant dye sample collection so you’ll be able to see for yourself the colours that different plants can produce!
