Drawing from Life - Summer School
There are oh so many life-drawing salons these days, but opportunities for taught sessions are few and far between. Until now! Join us for our Life Drawing summer school led by drawing specialist Susannah Bolton. With a different model each week and fully contextualised Art tutoring you’ll be finding form in no time!
Drawing from Life / Week 1
WEDNESDAY 7TH AUGUST 2019 / 19:30 TO 21:00 / SURREY ART SCHOOL
Theme: Neolithic bodies/movement
In this first ‘warm up’ session we’ll explore the fundamental shapes of the body through gestural mark-making inspired by early drawings of people from the neolithic period. We’ll capture the essence of a body and action using quick sketching techniques with chalk and home-made Newdigate charcoal!
Drawing from life - Week 2
WEDNESDAY 14TH AUGUST 2019 / 19:30 TO 21:00 / SURREY ART SCHOOL
Theme: Collage and Colour
Inspired by Matisse and his flowing cut out series we’ll be getting creative with collage materials using paper and acrylic to explore colour and form in this fun mixed media class.
Expect gestural painting, playful composition and of course context - blending traditional and more contemporary approaches to recording the figure from observation.
Drawing from life - Week 3
WEDNESDAY 21st AUGUST 2019 / 19:30 TO 21:00 / SURREY ART SCHOOL
Theme: Hands, Feet and Joints
Fingers, feet and skeletal forms can cause a bit of conflict in the mind - perhaps because they are so familiar and yet a bit fiddly to capture correctly? For this session we’ll work with pencil, fine-liners, brush pens and watercolours to create a series of studies that will help you capture proportion and fine detail with ease.
Drawing from life - Week 4
WEDNESDAY 28th AUGUST 2019 / 19:30 TO 21:00 / SURREY ART SCHOOL
Theme: Fabric / Grounding
This final session brings together all the skills you’ll have gathered over the summer so that you can fully tackle the full figure with confidence! We’ll explore fabric and draping, forging links between the fabric and the folds of the flesh itself. Poses will be more dyanmic, shifting from one to the next
The Body of work you’ll create:
This course will tackle all aspects of figure based observation, recording from a different model each week. Students will learn how to look, translate, and record the body from life - building both confidence and technical skill and exploring these core concepts:
How to look: Sighting is a vital aspect of drawing from observation and Susannah will help you develop your ‘seeing’ skills as well as your ability to measure angles and proportion correctly.
Capturing movement: You’ll learn about gesture and mark-making through dynamic poses and fun warm up sessions
Scale and Focal Points: Understand how to translate the form to paper with accuracy- from fiddly joints to smooth expanses of skin
Colour and Gesture: A mixed media approach will enliven your studies as we learn how to use a range of recording tools from pencil, graphite and fine liners to flowing acrylics and watercolours -you’ll learn as much about materials as you do about technique!
Context: Each session will build on a new inspiration points to expand your knowledge of the body through Art history to the present day
