Ebru (Paper) Marbling
This season we are inviting you to meet with Ebru for a calming and mindful introduction to the magical art of painting on water. Ebru - also known as cloud-painting for the way that the paint clouds as it spreads across the water - is an ancient art-form originating in Turkey and dating back to as early as the 15th Century. Of course we’ll be adding a contemporary twist to the outcomes we produce, but the rest of the experience will be as authentic as it gets folks!
Workshop date: Saturday 19th October 2019
Workshop Time: 10:00 to 13:00
Workshop Location: Surrey Art School, Dean House Farm, RH5 5DL
Workshop Tutor: Ebru Koçak
Ebru by name, Ebru by nature - the super gentle Ebru Kocak will gently guide you through the stages of creating age old Ebru patterns - painting on the surface of thickened water bath before pulling prints from the surface.
Ebru is an Art form that must be practised slowly and mindfully, with utmost respect and care given to each stage of the process - starting with making the horse hair brushes by hand, mixing paints from natural pigments and preparing a water bath using a specialised moss to create the correct viscosity for the paint to interact with.
You’ll start by learning how to create ‘mother’ of all Ebru patterns - Battal. From this base pattern Ebru will then demonstrate how to use hand-made combs and other tools to make new patterns from the Battal base.
Over the course of the morning you’ll learn all the core patterns designed by the old masters of Ebru. Of course once you’ve learned the core patterns you are free to design your own too! Once you’ve made your shapes, you’re ready to drop thin paper onto the surface of the water bath and pull a stunning print from the surface.
You’ll have a choice of natural pigments paints in order to create your designs and be offered expert support from Ebru herself at each stage of the process. By the end of the workshop you’ll have produced multiple prints to take home on the day.
All materials are prepared by hand by the artist in advance and are included in your workshop booking.
*Note: Please do not wear perfumes, use hand-creams or any other product on the surface of your skin or clothes when attending this workshop - all can affect the delicate water bath from which the paintings are made!
