Following a thread…

Take a wander with us on a mindful journey through drawing, photography, print and textiles in this full day creative print and textiles course led by artist-teacher Paul Wye. We’ll be exploring the local area and gathering sketches, foraging materials and taking photographs - using colour, texture and pattern to inform further studio based creations across the day.

Course date: Sunday 15th September 2019

Course level: Beginners and adventurers!

Course Time: 10:30 to 4:30

Location: Surrey Art School, The Old Dairy, RH5 5DL.

Tutor: Paul Wye

The day will starts with a mindful walk around the studio surroundings where you’ll be given a small sketchbook to record quick sketches and be invited to take photographs and forage for materials as inspiration for the day’s workshops.

We’ll then return to the studio where Paul will share his Textiles and Print sketchbooks and demonstrate some creative ideas for both recording in your sketchbooks and developing a visual narrative inspired by your walk.

This fun experimental day course includes sketchbook development tips, table weaving, chenilling, mono-printing and much more as we use a mindful walk and sketching to develop a narrative for sensory sketch-booking.

Through the rest of the day you’ll have the opportunity to explore a range of print-making and textiles inspired practices.

You’ll start by making sellotape textile strips, investigating how to integrate colour, pattern and texture into your work and to help you develop your own textile based sketchbook.

This will be followed by some creative mono-printing onto both fabric and paper using natural materials gathered on your walk and taking inspiration from your drawings and the beautiful seasonal Autumnal colours. You’ll create some stand-alone pieces but some of your prints will also feed into some collage later in the day.

We’ll then move on to exploring table weaving, chenilling and other stitch and textile based processes that are a core element in Paul’s own textile inspired creative practice.

By the end of the day you’ll have explored a whole range of print, textiles, stitch and construction techniques that will help you thread together a story to reflect both your physical and creative journey.

You’ll come away with a sketchbook bursting with new ideas and filled with exciting experiments that capture the moment.

All materials as well as an A5 sketchbook are included in your session as are plenty of creative feedback, banter, tea and biscuits. Lighten up a Sunday morning and come and play in the studio.
