Experimental Print with Paul Wye

This season the amazing Paul Wye aka Tinker's Trinkets brings his Print-making expertise to the studio with a series of day courses to add depth and new dimensions to your print-making practice. Paul's day courses and workshops are exciting, inventive and introduce unique and original ways of working with print!

Kitchen Lithography Day Course

Originally discovered by Artist-printmaker Emilion - kitchen lithography involves using household products to re-create the effects of a lithographic print (usually created using a stone plate). This super-fun and highly experimental day course will walk you through the process of creating a printing plate using tin-foil and then using a fizzy drink to bite at the plate so you can then use it to create a print.

Workshop Location: Our studio space is an old converted dairy brimming with character in a beautiful rural location and with plenty of free parking! You can find a map to the studio here: Surrey Art School, The Old Dairy, Dean House Farm, Dorking.

Course Date: Saturday 29th June 2019

Course Time: 10:30 am to 4:30 pm

Location: Surrey Art School, The Old Dairy, RH5 5DL.

Tutor: Paul Wye

In this full day course suitable for absolute beginners and artists looking to broaden their practice, Paul will give you a thorough introduction to the multiple ways of working with this simple but highly effective home-printing technique.

Create a drawing or painting onto Aluminium foil using anything from sharpies, to vegetable oil, wd-40 and other household products. Paul will then demonstrate how to create a 'bite' in the plate working with Coca Cola.

After this you'll be able to ink up and create multiple prints from your hand-made Aluminium printing plate, exploring different colour combinations and experimenting with inking up and wiping down the plate in an amazing variety of ways!

Fine detailed drawings can be made using a fine-line permanent marker or more painterly marks, even text can be created by using a brush to apply vegetable fats, oils and more.

If you're looking to create stunning artist-quality prints, using the simplest of materials and without the need for a press, this is the course for you! All materials and plenty of advice on hand throughout the day.

Lino Etch Day Course

Throw away you cutting tools!

This fab day course teaches you how to create beautiful, almost painterly marks on lino, smooth indents or rugged textures with a lot less elbow grease than traditional cutting tools and a range of NEW opportunities to experiment with the surface of a lino block.

Course Date: Sunday 10th March 2019

Course level: Beginners and Explorers!

Course Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Location: Surrey Art School, The Old Dairy, RH5 5DL.

Tutor: Paul Wye

Lino etch is an exciting and expressive technique that uses chemicals (caustic soda) to bite into the Lino to create an image - rather than traditional cutting. This process will encourage you to be expressive and gestural in your mark making and is a perfect counter point to more graphic lino cutting techniques

We'll begin the day by using varnish to paint, drizzle, flick and splat your images, using a range of impressionistic marks. Once you have varnished your plates we will use a mix of caustic soda to bite into the surface of your plates and reveal your designs.

Once the plates have been bitten we will then explore printing with both standard relief printing as well as intaglio 'a la poupée' to layer colours and interest in your prints.

Lino etch is a unique process that will allow you to produce your own highly distinctive prints
